Masaaki Toyoura is a photographer whose specialties are difficult to define. As well as taking and publishing distinctive bondage photos, he has also devoted much effort to the creation of imaginary "fetish art," in which the subjects featured are dolls or angel-like female creatures sprouting wings. His photos related to nudity and bondage have won him acclaim both in Japan as well as abroad. The word "bondage" may conjure up images of esoteric, arcane photos that lend themselves to various interpretations. However, Masaaki is not a photographer specializing in bondage art, at least in the strict sense of the word. Most people who are into bondage art do so because they are sadistic or masochistic, or both. In other words, they take up bondage in order to sexually express themselves. However, Masaaki sees bondage art purely as a tool for expressing his own conceptions of what beauty is all about. By no means is he what the average man on the street would call a sexual "pervert."
One trait common to most of Masaaki's pictures is that the subjects who appear in them have been "depersonalized." In other words, they are inert objects, to be molded into expressions of artistic beauty. Masaaki's impersonal approach to modeling his subjects does have its merits, for the end results are often strikingly beautiful images that are difficult to obtain in any other way. Viewing Masaaki's photos is an experience in itself, like going to the movie theater. His photos are a study in contrasts, with female entities seemingly leaping out at you from the pictures' black background. They are also a clear invitation; an invitation to come and explore the subtle intricacies and nuances that abound in bondage art. Masaaki Toyoura is one of the few artists who are capable of packing this much into the narrow confines of a photograph.
